Intro to Clinics (PRECL-DN)

Part 1 A: This course prepares the 1st year students to treat orthodontic patients in the clinic. With the summer orientation course, students will learn and practice basic clinical skills such as obtaining quality records and using orthodontic appliances and their indications. The students will also learn the foundation of diagnosis and treatment planning and practice these new skills on new patients. This course is composed of 2 essential modules listed below: 1. Orthodontic Summer Orientation for 1st year students 2. Clinical Orthodontics (Year 1)

Part 1 A: This course is a didactic course composed of four essential modules listed below: 1. Diagnosis & Treatment Planning I 2. Orthodontic Mechanotherapy 3. Orthodontic Research I 4. Orthodontic Practice Management Seminars I These modules teach foundation knowledge for clinical practice in orthodontics. This knowledge will be supplemented throughout the 3 years. In this course, students will learn the fine points of orthodontics diagnosis and how to plan orthodontic treatment according to the diagnosis. In addition, students will learn basic orthodontic mechanics and how forces applied to teeth move them in a predetermined direction. They will also learn basic elements of practice management, including ethics and jurisprudence, as well as how to set up an orthodontic research project. (Year 1)

Part 2 A: In addition to treating patients in the clinic – clinical orthodontics – the students will also practice evaluating treatment outcomes using the CRE scoring system devised by the American Board of Orthodontics. (Year 2)

Part 2 A: This foundational course provides comprehensive instruction in clinical orthodontic principles, establishing core competencies that progressively develop throughout the three-year postgraduate program. Students acquire advanced diagnostic competencies and their systematic application to evidence-based treatment planning protocols. Students advance from research proposal development to the implementation of their investigative methodologies. This course is composed of three essential modules listed below: 1. Diagnosis & Treatment Planning II 2. Orthodontic Mechanotherapy II 3. Orthodontic Research II (Year 2)

Part 3 A: Students will complete at least 60 cases during their last year in the program. They will also prepare for the clinical phase of the American Board of Orthodontics certification: finishing cases and assessing the results, select cases for the mock board examination and ultimately the phase III ABO examination. (Year 3)

Part 3 A: This course reviews and recapitulates the knowledge needed for orthodontic clinical practice in the finishing stages of treatment and is composed of 3 essential modules listed below: 1. Orthodontic Mechanotherapy III 2. Orthodontic Research III (Year 3)

Part A: This course includes advanced training in core pediatric dental clinical techniques, documentation and treatment planning, administration of local anesthesia, use of nitrous oxide/oxygen and behavior management, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and the provision of comprehensive pediatric dental services in hospital and community-based dental clinic settings. (Year 1)

Part A: This course consists of didactic lecture modules that focus on evidence-based pediatric dentistry, pediatric clinical case presentations, special topics in pediatric dentistry, early interceptive orthodontics, special needs populations, pediatric oral medicine and pathology, sedation and behavior management in pediatric populations, child development and psychology, and independent study in research methodology. (Year 1)

Part A: This course includes advanced training in core pediatric dental clinical techniques, documentation and treatment planning, administration of local anesthesia, use of nitrous oxide/oxygen and behavior management, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and the provision of comprehensive pediatric dental services in hospital and community-based dental clinic settings. (Year 2)

Part 1A: The goal of these seminars is to provide a thorough and a systematic method for evaluation of patients and determination of a treatment plan. The case discussions focus on evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment sequencing, and treatment outcome assessments with a focus on a patient-centered approach and evidence-based discussion. This course is offered to PGY1 Prosthodontics and PGY1 Periodontics students.

Part A: Postgraduate students are expected to demonstrate competence in the laboratory aspects of prosthodontics and the fundamentals of treatment planning for complex prosthodontic care. Educate and graduate dentists with technical competence and critical judgment skills to manage complex prosthodontic treatments and develop practice management skills essential for planning and executing complex prosthodontic treatments. (Year 1)

Part 1 A: Patient clinic/patient care implementing biologic and evidence based themes in periodontal and implant therapy. Focus on basic diagnosis, treatment, and Assessment and maintenance of treatment results. (Year 1)

Part 2 A: Patient clinic/patient care implementing biologic and evidence based themes in periodontal and implant therapy in increasingly complex diagnostics, treatment, and assessment and maintenance of treatment results. (Year 2)

Part 3 A: Patient clinic/patient care implementing biologic and evidence based themes in periodontal and implant therapy in complex diagnostics, treatment, and assessment and maintenance of treatment results. (Year 3)

Part 1 A: This course is a collaboration with the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry. "Seminars in Orthognathic Surgery" combines lectures with case presentations. First-year residents use a standardized template to present starting cases with comprehensive diagnostic records. Each presentation emphasizes identifying etiological factors, analyzing skeletal and dental relationships, and developing evidence-based treatment plans. In the "Pedo-Ortho Conference," orthodontic and pediatric residents collaborate in rotating case presentations to assess the timing and necessity of orthodontic intervention, followed by discussions of treatment strategies. (Year 1)

First-year students present patient cases, focusing on malocclusion diagnosis and treatment plans developed in collaboration with faculty mentors. Through literature review presentations, students explore the historical foundations and scientific principles of orthodontics. Class discussions foster the development of critical thinking skills essential for clinical practice and evidence-based decision-making. (Year 1)

Advanced Education training programs all require some level of participation in research or scholarly activity. Each program sets its own research/scholarly activity requirements to meet or exceed the accreditation standards defined by that discipline. Projects may be lab-based, literature-based, or translational in nature. Students are required to participate in a project at the level defined by their program and demonstrate familiarization with and/or the application of principles of research methodology, types of research design, critical review of the existing literature, statistical analysis of results, and compliance with IRB, PHI, HIPAA, and ethical challenges confronted in conducting research projects. All PG students are expected to complete a project that is publication ready, approved for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and/or has been submitted and approved for presentation at a local, national, or international professional scientific meeting.

Part 1 B: This course continues to prepare the 1st-year student to treat patients in the orthodontic clinic under the direct supervision of licensed faculty responsible for the care provided to the patients. The students will also acquire foundation knowledge of diagnosis and treatment planning and practice these skills on patients. (Year 1)

Part 1 B: This course establishes the fundamental knowledge essential for clinical orthodontic practice, which continues to develop throughout the three-year program. Students will learn the fine points of orthodontics diagnosis and how to plan orthodontic treatment according to the diagnosis. Additionally, students begin developing their research proposals, integrating evidence-based principles. (Year 1)

Part 2 B: While 3rd-year students lead the group practice, 2nd-year students dedicate significant time to treating patients in various stages of care. Each student is responsible for treating at least 60 new patients and managing cases transferred from recent graduates. Second-year students also provide clinical support to both first- and third-year residents. (Year 2)

Part 2 B: This foundational course provides comprehensive instruction in clinical orthodontic principles, establishing core competencies that progressively develop throughout the three-year postgraduate program. Students acquire advanced diagnostic competencies and their systematic application to evidence-based treatment planning protocols. Students advance from research proposal development to the implementation of their investigative methodologies. (Year 2)

Part 3 B: The third and final year of clinical education focuses on case completion and preparation for the ABO clinical examination. Students will learn finishing and detailing techniques to ensure optimal treatment outcomes. Twenty completed cases will be thoroughly analyzed using the ABO writeup format. Prior to graduation, students will participate in case-based clinical examinations designed to prepare them for Board certification. (Year 3)

Part 1 B: This course includes advanced training in core pediatric dental clinical techniques, documentation and treatment planning, administration of local anesthesia, use of nitrous oxide/oxygen and behavior management, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and the provision of comprehensive pediatric dental services in hospital and community-based dental clinic settings. (Year 1)

Part B: The preclinical workshop in Prosthodontics B includes the Digital Dentistry Series and ITI (International Team of Implantology) Online Education. Postgraduate students receive information on digital dentistry and the application of various technologies in prosthodontic treatments. The ITI Online Education offers curated and structured knowledge on implant dentistry from dental professionals around the globe. (Year 1)

Part 2 B: This course is a collaboration with the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry. "Seminars in Orthognathic Surgery" combines lectures with case presentations. Second-year residents present ongoing cases using a standard template. Each presentation evaluates treatment progress and the potential need for plan adjustments. Students improve their diagnostic and problem-solving skills through discussions with faculty and peers. In the "Pedo-Ortho Conference," orthodontic and pediatric residents collaborate in rotating case presentations to assess the timing and necessity of orthodontic intervention, followed by discussions of treatment strategies. (Year 2)

Part 3 B: This course is a collaboration with the Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry. "Seminars in Orthognathic Surgery" combines lectures with case presentations. Third-year residents present completed cases using a standard template to evaluate treatment plans and outcomes. Treatment results are assessed by comparing initial, progress, and final records, including cephalometric superimpositions. Students enhance their clinical expertise through interactive discussions with faculty and peers. In the "Pedo-Ortho Conference," orthodontic and pediatric residents collaborate in rotating case presentations to assess the timing and necessity of orthodontic intervention, followed by discussions of treatment strategies. (Year 3)

Part B: PG students to be competent in laboratory aspects in periodontics. Educate graduate dentists with technical competence and critical judgment skills to manage complex periodontics treatments.
